This is a reprint of the 1898 classic by a member of Jeb Stuart’s Cavalry and the Virginia Light Artillery. It is a collection of wartime reminisces and experiences by the author of the famous book, A Rebel’s Recollections. Though an Indiana native, he “adopted the state of Virginia and enlisted in the CS cavalry in May of 1861 and was finally paroled at Appomattox Courthouse.

During his wartime service he saw service in Virginia and South Carolina. He was a keen observer of the war describes his own experiences, other soldiers, and the plight of civilians caught up in the war. In later life he became an author of note, with a long and distinguished career editing and writing for America’s major periodicals.
